The Daughter & the Old Car

A father said to his daughter one afternoon, “You have graduated from school with honors. Here is the old car I bought many years ago that you have helped me with on and off through the years. I want to give it to you as a gift. It is pretty old now. But, before I give it to you, please take it down to the used car lot downtown, and tell them I want to sell it. See how much they offer you for it.”

The daughter agreed and went to the used car lot. She returned to her father and said, “They offered me $1,000. When I asked why, they said it looked ‘pretty worn out.’”

The father said, “Alright, then, take it to the pawn shop.”

The daughter drove over to the pawn shop. When she returned to her father, she said, ”The pawn shop offered only $100. When I asked why so little, They replied, ‘It is an old car.’”

The father, finally, asked his daughter to drive it over to the local car club that was meeting that evening and show them the car.

She agreed and took the car to the club. Upon her return she told her father, ”A few people in the club offered me $100,000 for for the car. They told me ‘it’s an iconic car and this model and year has been sought by many collectors.’”

“Now,” the father said this to his daughter, “the right place values you in the right way. If you are not valued, do not be angry. It only confirms that you are in the wrong place. Those who know your value are those who appreciate you.”

Never stay in the place where those around you cannot see your value.
